ENG 308 : Critical Approaches: Studying and Writing about Literature
Prerequisites: Junior Standing
This is a course for Secondary English specialists. This course expands on the Exploring Literature courses taken in the second year. Students will begin by looking at the basic components of any literary work: setting, plot, character, structure, style, atmosphere, and theme across different genres in literature. It also allows students to look in more detail at some prominent schools of thought in critical theory, and to become more critical in their own essay writing. Readings include drama, fiction, poetry, and theoretical essays. Specific topics, reading lists, and course outlines will be published annually.
