ENG 405 : Modern poetry (Yeats, Eliot, Auden, etc.)

Prerequisites: Senior Standing

This is a course for Secondary English specialists. In this course, students will read and examine Modernist poetry, i.e. poetry written between 1890 and 1930. They will discuss the Imagists and the rise of modernism and its characteristics in contrast with the characteristics of Romanticism. In tracing the development of Modernist poetry, students will pay particular attention to the use of free verse (and the possibility of musical rhythm within it) and exact language. Specific topics, reading lists, and course outlines will be published annually.
