Prerequisites: ENG 102

The course focuses on reading and the development of literacy as a core area of the curriculum. UNESCO defines literacy as the «Ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society.» This course discusses the ways to support young children as they acquire the knowledge and skills they need to become literate. Mastering a range of skills from phonological awareness to decoding, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary is necessary for reading proficiency.
